WHAT IS AGILE?Agile is a type of work sprint that is used in the software development world. "Sprints" last two weeks and each group, or "squad" is given a task to complete within those two weeks. The Squad members are trusted to divide up roles and specific assignments by strengths, and hold each other accountable. THE GOAL OF CLASSWe want them to use French as means of COMMUNICATION. The only way to do this is to shift the focus of foreign language from reading and writing and grammar into speaking, listening, responding, and being culturally aware. This class is about communicating! I want them to stop sitting in desks in hypothetical situations and start creating real world scenarios that they have to use the language in order to survive. WHY AGILE?As we use two weeks to teach one unit, Agile learning sprints are perfect for the French classroom! Each two week task is used to create a real world scenario where the students will need to know culture, vocabulary, and proper mechanics for the target language. This gives authenticity and meaning to the language learning itself. HOW IS AGILE GOING TO WORK?For French 1, the squads will be formed at the beginning of the unit, and each squad given their Integrated Performance Assessment (IPA). They will have two weeks in class to produce their own assessment through speaking, reading, writing, and working together.
This year, I am starting a new position at Wheeler High School as a French 1 teacher. I am so stoked! French 1 is my favorite class to teach because there is so much cognitive and intellectual work that goes into learning a brand new language.

New Online TextbookThis year is exciting--so many changes to look forward to in Shiloh High French Department! Block schedule, launch of academies, and a bigger foreign language department! First of all, we are getting rid of the outdated textbooks (with vocabulary words that included "floppy disk"--the kids all asked what a floppy disk even was!) and are replacing them with new, up to date textbooks called D'accord which means "Okay" or "in agreement" in French. This textbook is excellent for students and teachers--it has a short video segment at the beginning of each lesson that pertains to the content. Every student will receive (hopefully by October) their own virtual version of the book. Students will be expected to do the interactive exercises for reading, listening, speaking, and writing ONLINE! This is great because students can get immediate feedback about what they are doing right instead of waiting for that one minute a day where they can say an answer during class and I can tell them whether they are right or wrong. Interactive NotebooksAnother exciting part of this year will be the use of interactive notebooks. Interactive notebooks are a new way of note taking that is implemented a lot by foreign language immersion programs in elementary school, as well as middle and high schools across the country. Students will need to take responsibility for their own notebook, and everything--I mean EVERYTHING, will go in their notebook. I have started a sample one for French One using a blend of products other teachers have created on Teachers Pay Teachers and my own stuff. As you can see, it is a more visual way of taking notes that students will spend time on, think about, and use over and over. Color and design is SO important when learning a new language, this will engage all types of learners and be a good resource for future French classes. I will grade it every six weeks to make sure everyone is on track. Bi-Weekly NewsletterA personal goal for me is to be better at parent communication. In addition to eClass, I want to keep up with this blog, but also send out a bi-weekly newsletter for parents to stay in the know. (And I'll include a French lesson so you can talk to your student about it!) More details coming up soon.
